Tricia Snell is a writer (currently working on a novel) and flutist (currently playing in a trio, Trillium). She is the author of a poetry chapbook, Rooted (The Little Books Collective, 2023), and a story (fiction) of hers was long-listed for the 2019 CBC Short Story Award and published in Room magazine (Dec 2019). A story (fiction) of Tricia’s was included in the PEN Syndicated Fiction Project / National Public Radio show, The Sound of Writing, read by actor Barbara Rappaport (1993). Her writing can also be found in Every Day FictionArt Papers, Oregon Humanities, The Oregonian, and The Grove Review. She is also the author of a nonfiction book/directory Artist Communities (Allworth Press, 1996/2000).

Tricia teaches writing workshops (Generative, Craft, and Critique) as well as novel study groups (through Soapstone) from her home studio in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. For information click here.

As a flutist, Tricia has performed in various chamber music ensembles, community orchestras, contra dance bands, and Celtic sessions. Currently she plays in the trio, Trillium (Tricia: flutes/whistles/recorders/vocals; Bev Shaw: violin/fiddle/vocals; and Liam Britten: guitar/banjo/mandolin). Tricia is a trained music teacher (Suzuki and Music Together certified) who has taught in public schools, community music schools, preschools, and her own private flute & recorder studio. Currently she is taking a break from music teaching.

Tricia holds an MFA in Creative Writing (Fiction) from George Mason University,  (Fairfax, Virginia, USA) and an ARCT flute performance diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto, Ontario, Canada).

Tricia has led two arts nonprofits and been a writer/project manager for environmental organizations. She was most recently Executive Director of Caldera, an Oregon youth arts and artist residency nonprofit (2007-2017) and founding Executive Director of the international network of artist residency programs, the Alliance of Artists Communities (1994-2002).

Tricia has held a range of public service and arts grant panelist roles. In 2015 she was proud to accept, on behalf of Caldera, a National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award from the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, presented to her and a Caldera student by First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House in Washington DC.

She lives in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Movable Home  Tricia was born and grew up in Port Hope, Ontario, Canada and lived in Toronto during her twenties. She visits Ontario frequently, as many of her family members and friends live there.

She has also lived in Washington, DC; San Francisco, California; and Portland, Oregon. She returned to Canada–specifically to Lunenburg, Nova Scotia–in 2017.

As a child, Tricia spent summers in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada, where her father was born, as well as in Caterham, Surrey, England, where her mother was born.

With her husband Dave Clingan’s family in Tacoma, Washington, her touring musician son Lucas Snell Biespiel based in Charleston, South Carolina, and her step-son George Clingan in Denver, Colorado, her family extends across the United States as well.
